THE ROYAL COACH. A Jewel from the Mews of the British Monarchy

Ex-Royal British Mews, ex-James Coson Collection, Fastidiously Restored. c.1835 Traveling Landau Coachwork by Adams & Hooper, London, England. Estimate £200,000 - 300,000 (€270,000 - 410,000). Photo Bonhams

OXFORD - An ex-Royal British Mews Landau Coach, commissioned by King William IV, and once featured in a collection described by Prince Philip as 'the pride of North America,' is among the highlights of the Carriage Collection auction at Bonhams Oxford on 7 March 2015.

Painstakingly assembled by a European industrialist, the privately owned collection of carriages contains more than 150 lots, with some dating back as far as the 17th century. Never previously exhibited, the auction at Bonhams will be the first time the collection is available for public view, and several lots are coming to auction for the first time.

Built by prestigious coach-builders, Adams & Hooper, King William IV's coach leads the sale with an estimate of £200,000-300,000. Travelling Landaus were used by the nobility on extended tours in Britain and Continental Europe, and it is believed that the carriage would have been used by trusted representatives - possibly the King himself - when undertaking these long journeys.

'During the past 30 years, this fascinating collection has been lovingly maintained and painstakingly restored - and occasionally used in international carriage competition - by their Dutch owner,' said Rob Hubbard, Motoring Specialist at Bonhams. 'It's quite rare for such a vast single-owner collection of this quality to come to market, so it has attracted much international attention.'
