An Iznik polychrome pottery dish with birds, Turkey, circa 1600Estimation 12,000 — 15,000 GBP. Photo: Sotheby's.

the shallow circular form decorated in underglaze grey-blue, green, relief red and black outlines with a central design of birds and flowers, with a breaking wave border, foliate motifs to underside;25.3cm. diam.

NoteIznik production in the first half of the seventeenth century is characterised by a fashion for figural designs, including birds and animals, of which this is a vibrant example. Raby and Atasoy observe that it is in the nature of these representations to be "full of animation and charm" (Atasoy and Raby 1989, p.258).
