Lot 3734. A pair of black lacquer foliate dishes, Song dynasty (960-1279); 15.5 cm., 6 1/8  in. Estimate 200,000 — 300,000 HKD. Lot sold 437,500 HKD (437,500 EUR)© Sotheby's

each finely constructed with shallow rounded sides rising from a low foot to a slightly everted six-lobed gilt rim, divided into six lobes by small ridges evenly radiating around the cavetto, the lacquer of a lustrous deep brownish-black colour.

NoteThe present dish takes its petal-lobed form from Ding porcelain of the late Tang dynasty and demonstrates the degree of dialogue between the Ding ceramicists and lacquer craftsmen. In turn, the gentle recessed base on this piece can be seen to have been adopted by ceramicists. An individual dish of similar form from the collection of Sakamoto Goro was sold in these rooms, 8th October 2013, lot 141.
