Still Life with Cauliflower and Eggs by Kevin Best

'Luis Melendez painted a beautiful Still Life with a Cauliflower, this is my version. The Cauli is not my favourite vegetable but it has great texture, and the light just loves it.

Originally I had placed thae Cauliflower up the other way so all the white flowers could be aseen. But it didn't sit well, so I turned it over and these beautiful leaves came into shot.

While this series of Spanish still lifes doesn't really beg to be interpreted, I can't help but read these leaves as protecting the flowers from the harsh gaze of the viewer.'

'I'm loving this Spanish still life series, it's all about light and shade, texture and reflections. Nothing deep, no hidden narrative. Just something that makes me at least feel warn and cozy. It reminds me of my Mum making preserves.'

'I was in the National Gallery in London a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with "Still Life with Oranges and Walnuts" by Luis Melendez. So I think it's time to give my beloved Netherlands a holiday and move to sunny Spain for a while. Much to learn about the Spanish Still Lifes.'
