A carved Longquan celadon  'phoenix-tail' vase, Ming dynasty, 14th-15th century

A carved Longquan celadon 'phoenix-tail' vase, Ming dynasty, 14th-15th century. Estimate $10,000 – $12,000. Photo Christie's Image Ltd 2015.

The vase is freely carved on the tapering body with lotus scroll above a petal-lappet border. The tall, flared cylindrical neck is carved with additional lotus scroll beneath raised ribs on the trumpet-form mouth. The vase is covered overall with a glaze of pale olive-green color. 16 1/8 in. (41 cm.) high, wood stand, Japanese double wood box

NoteA similar Longquan celadon vase, but carved with plantain leaves on the neck rather than lotus scroll, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 May 2014, lot 3406.
