Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). "Bomb Hanoi", Color offset lithograph. 1966. Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000.

Signed in black marker, lower left. Edition c500. Perforated, glue-backed postage stamp paper. Full margins. Very good impression.

Condition: overall a very good example of a notoriously fragile object.

Literature/catalogue raisonne: Unknown to Feldman/Schellmann. Only two auction records in the past 28 years located (1990, Phillips, London; 2008, Swann Galleries, New York City), only the Phillips example signed. The very rare Warhol designed cover for "Some/Thing," Volume 2, Number 1, edited by David Antin and Jerome Rothenberg. This issue, the third installment of the influential avant-garde biannual periodical (note the number "3" on the cover, lower center), was dedicated to the Vietnam War and the bombing of Hanoi, initiated in 1966. Texts by Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowsi, Gerard Malanga, and a host of other 1960s notables. This early Warhol design forms 12 glue-backed perforated stickers, which were intended to be torn from the periodical and affixed like postage stamps. Given this fact and the very small edition size, precious few copies survive intact. The image dates from around the same time as his "S&H Green Stamps," created as an announcement for an exhibition of his work at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. Overall size: 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (216 x 140 mm). [28360] |2400| {R100} (TL1) czzz~szzz
