A striking vase with lavish landscape painting in Chinese style, called “Gom Han- Viet“. Around the foot are large borders with blossoms and trapezoid flat pattern, around the neck large wheel-shaped blossoms with bud tendrils. The landscape picture offers some high mountains, lake with sailing ships and fishers, as well as huts and pavilions with people inside enjoying the view. This idyll is a dramatic contrast to the furious dragon painted on the other side: Encircled by flames between clouds and over tumbling waves, out of which a carp jumps toward the dragon (according to the myth of “dragon gates“ = river rapids where carps turn into dragons). On the vase shoulder are four sculptural heads of palace dogs. The domed lid with brim is purely floral in design with wheel-shaped blossoms, topped with a bud-shaped knob. On the bottom, square bordered Four Character Mark Kangxi nian zhi 康 熙 年 製 as well as trademark. 青白山水龍紋大罐帶蓋。越南,19世紀晚期。 高61.7厘米。HEIGHT 61,7 CM

This porcelain vase originates presumably in the imperial palace of Hue and was acquired by the German collector in 1985 in Hue. The Vietnamese porcelain is dominated by Chinese influences. Almost every Chinese Dynasty advanced to Vietnam, Chinese kilns made ceramic for the Hue court, explaining the French term “Bleu de Hue“. The younger ceramic center is located in the South, in Dong Nai.

From a German collection.
