A rare Longquan celadon-glazed incense burner, 15th century
A rare Longquan celadon-glazed incense burner, 15th century. Estimate £20,000 - 30,000 (€28,000 - 42,000). Photo Bonhams.
The heavily potted barrel-shaped body raised on three mask and paw feet, decorated with blooming peonies amidst scrolling foliage between borders of applied florets and stylised mountains, the neck surrounded by a ruyi band, covered overall with a glaze of olive-green colour. 18cm (7in) high
Notes: The present incense burner is of particularly unusual and complex form, combining the more conventional tall cylindrical incense burners with the wider bowl shaped ones.
Compare the treatment of the lower decorative scheme, similarly decorated on a Longquan celadon glazed arrow vase, 14th/15th century, from the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated by Tsai Mei-fen, ed., Green - Longquan Celadon of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 2009, pl.105.
