A rare coral-red-ground famille rose yenyen vase and stand, Circa 1720. Estimate HK$240,000 - 340,000 (€29,000 - 41,000). Photo: Bonhams.
The rich coral-red ground reserved with leaf-shaped and scroll-shaped cartouches on each side of the body, variously depicting sprays of vivid peonies and lilies enamelled in shades of pink, yellow, green and blue, with delicate branches of flowering prunus issuing from the leaf-shaped panel, the trumpet neck decorated with various scholar's objects including incense burners, flower vases, a scroll and books, all raised on a coral-glazed reticulated stand supported on five lobed lotus-shaped feet. 47.5cm (18 3/4in) high (2).
Provenance: An important European private collection
Notes: The present lot is rare for its unusual use of famille rose, as vases and stands of this type are predominantly in the famille verte palette, indicative of a very late Kangxi period or the beginning of the Yongzheng period, circa 1720 to date. At the end of the Kangxi period, a new range of colours were developed in response to the Kangxi emperor's admiration of European enamels. The employment of European Jesuit missionaries, including the German Kilian Stumpf, who in 1696 supervised the new imperial glassworks, resulted in a wider range of enamels available to the ceramic decorators at the end of the Kangxi period.
