Jesus with the cross, 1526/1550, Limoges

9

Jesus with the cross, 1526-1550, Limoges. Copper & glass flux and metal oxide & Gold, technology: Polychrome enamel painting and gold drawing. Height: 13.0 - Width: 11.0. Ident.Nr. K 5096. Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin © Photo: Kunstgewerbemuseum der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz. Photo Saturia Linke.

Christ turned to the right, wearing a T-shaped cross. In the foreground are two mercenaries with their backs to the viewer, his hands raised to taunts. In the background left Maria and two companions, the right of them two warriors in armor. The template for the presentation gave an engraving of a Passion of Christ by Martin Schongauer. Characteristic of the creators of this panel are the monumental, very constricted to the figures picture, furthermore, the elongated figures with small narrow heads, summarily treated limbs, extreme head rotations and pointy-nosed profiles. It is also characteristic the broad-based drawing, which merely reproduces characters and terrain in abbreviation and disregards spatial relationships. Iconographically true Berliner Tafel with the same scene on a reredos from Mesnil-sous-Jumièges the Musée Municipal of Limoges agree (Inv.Nr.81.376), which has the enameller awarded its provisional names (Notin 1991). SN
