Melchior d'Hondecoeter, A hen with peacocks and a turkey, ca. 1680
Melchior d'Hondecoeter, A hen with peacocks and a turkey, ca. 1680, oil on canvas, 134cm × h b 174,5cm. SK-C-146. On loan from the City of Amsterdam (legacy A. van der Hoop), Jun 30, 1885. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
One group of birds free-ranging to the foot of a pillar. In the foreground a turkey, behind a hen with chickens and two peacocks. Signature, left middle, "Mr. d Hondecoeter."
D'Hondecoeter knew his bird scenes enliven with scenes that unfold among the animals. Here bears them surrounded by large intimidating birds, caring for her chicks.
