Rock crystal wine barrel, possibly Annibale Fontana, c. 1575 - c. 1600, rock crystal, gold, enamel, pearls, rubies and emeralds. H 15.0 cm × w 22.0 cm × d 13.4 cm. BK-17116. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
Wine barrel cut from a piece of rock crystal with mountings of gold with enamel, pearls, rubies and emeralds. The vessel is decorated with representations of Bacchae with panthers , and waves with dragons and flow - gods in matt grinding.
The ends of this casket suggest that it could be hung up and the contents poured by tipping it. Depicted is a scene of merrymaking mythological figures. The river is filled with wine flowing from the jars.
