Porcelain vase with green 'celadon' glaze, China, Qing dynasty, Kangxi reign (1662-1722), Jingdezhen, China. Porcelain with celadon green glaze. Height: 24.1 cm. Museum number: C.429-1910 © V&A Images.

Porcelain vase with ovoidal shape, wide neck, and alternate vertical ribs and grooves on the body; the surface is covered by a 'celadon' green glaze. The base is unglazed, except for an inset medallion that bears a Chenghua mark painted in underglaze blue.

This porcelain vase was made in the kilns of Jingdezhen in Southern China during the early 1700s, at the time of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722). The colour of its glaze is generally known in Europe with the French term celadon, a distinct type of green with a bluish tone particularly popular in France during the 18th century.

The four-characters imperial mark on the base reads: 'Made during the Chenghua reign [1465-87]'. Earlier marks can be found on official and popular porcelain in China to enhance their value and prestige.
