the ovoid body with seven lightly incised vertical lines, the shoulders applied with a vigorously modeled dragon in high relief coiling around the cylindrical neck, rising to a cup-form mouth with lipped rim, supported on a slightly spreading foot, covered overall with a semi-translucent pale bluish-green glaze, stopping just short of the unglazed foot rim. Height 8 1/2 in., 21.6 cm
Note: The present example is notable for its restrained outline and fine potting. Similar examples of this form usually have a crimped gallery along the shoulder such as the one in the Barlow collection illustrated in Chinese Ceramics, Bronzes and Jades in the Collection of Sir Alan and Lady Barlow, London, 1963, pl. 107. Others also include some painted decoration such as the example illustrated in He Li, Chinese Ceramics, A New Comprehensive Survey From the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, London, 1996, pl. 299.
