Il ne fréquente pas l’école, et dès l’âge de 7 ans, devient apprenti menuisier auprès de son père et de son oncle, qui lui offre en 1935 son premier appareil photo, un petit Kodak Brownie.  En 1939, il gagne déjà sa vie en tant que photographe autodidacte, et en 1948 il ouvre son studio sur la parcelle familiale, dans un quartier très animé...
