with chrysanthemum decoration. The large dish with shallow rounded sides and a thick, cinnabar lacquer layer above a plain buff lacquer ground is in the interior deeply carved with a dense overlapping floral design of leaves, long, curved stems and flowering chrysanthemums in two, in some areas even three distinct layers, creating an impression of profusion and the effect of spatial depth; the reverse shows the same dense décor with a band of chrysanthemum flowers among leaves and stems, equally deeply carved in spatial layers around a straight foot of conforming shape, the interior of the base lacquered dark brown with long, parallel cracks. The thick cinnabar lacquer shows many thin cracks resulting of the age of the dish, some minor restorations, but otherwise in fine condition. D. 32,5 cm

Provenance: Former collection Baron N. von der Brueggen, St. Petersburg, sold Bangel, Frankfurt, published 727. catalogue, 2./3. March 1909, pl. X, lot 321
