Delicately enamelled with a narrative scene with six female riders in the courtyard of a large villa, with an official observing from a balcony, all surrounded with a border containing the Eight Buddhist Emblems reserved on a diaper ground. 41.3cm (16 1/4in) diam.
Provenance: Hancock, 37, Bury Street, St. James's, S.W.1 (label).
Note: The narrative scene on the present lot is taken from the dramatic work 'The Generals of the Yang Family' written and added to throughout the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. It depicts a legendary moment during the Northern Song Dynasty when, after all the men had been slaughtered by the Khitan invaders, the women of the Yang family took up arms and bravely galloped out to meet the enemy.
