Book-matched Pair of Illuminated Blue Calcite Slabs, Argentina
Lot 1032W. Book-matched Pair of Illuminated Blue Calcite Slabs, Argentina. Measuring 53 x 24 x 4in. Sold for US$ 10,625 (€9,489). Photo: Bonhams.
Originating from high in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, to our knowledge this is the largest pair of slabs to have been fashioned from this material. Since there is only a small vein of this unusual natural blue Calcite and most of the "mining" consists of collecting boulders near the surface. Reminiscent of aquamarine in color, but of a stronger, more vibrant shade of blue with intricate veining throughout. The quality of translucence when the panels are back lit provides an inner glow. The edges of the boulder have been left natural without being polished. These panels would create a stunning conversation piece in any corporate or residential interior.
