The raised panel on the baluster vase is inscribed with a calligraphic poem by Qianlong reserved on a yellow ground embellished with floral motifs in famille rose, the neck is decorated with a pink formal band and flanked by a pair of iron-red and gilt-decorated archaistic handles. The interior and base are covered in turquoise enamel, and the reverse has apertures for attachment. 7 1/4 in. (18.4 cm.) high

Notes: The poem inscribed on the present palanquin vase was written by the Qianlong Emperor in 1742, and it states that the vase was used in an imperial palanquin. Compare to a famille rose blue-ground wall vase from the collection of Sr Percival David, Bt., illustrated in the Illustrated Catalogue of Qing Enamelled Wares in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art: Section 2, London, 1991, Catalogue, no. A808.
