Lot 61.

A rare blue and white mallet vase, Yaoling zun, Kangxi mark and period

NoteThe distinctive form of this vase is named after its likeness to a handbell or mallet and was made only during the Kangxi period as discussed by Geng Baochang, Ming Qing Ciqi Jianding, Hong Kong, 1993, pp. 186-187, fig. 332. The four whorl-like medallions around the body of the vase resemble swirling three-section gakyils of the dharmachakra, one of the seminal emblems of the Buddhist doctrine. The decoration on vases of this type is executed only in underglaze blue, as on the present lot, or in copper-red, with only few examples known to be decorated with a subtle combination of both.

Few vases of this type are known. An underglaze-blue example formerly in the Imperial Collection and now in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is published in The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum. Blue and white Porcelain with Underglaze Red, vol. 3, Hong Kong, 2000, pl. 11. Another example of this type in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, is illustrated together with a slightly smaller copper-red version, in Suzanne Valenstein, A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1975, fig. 213, and again in Oriental Ceramics. The World's Great Collections, Tokyo, 1982, vol. 11, pl. 119; a third example of this vase decorated in underglaze-blue is published in Harry M. Garner, Oriental Blue and White, London, 1973, pl. 74 left. Yet another example from the Collection of Sir Harry and Lady Garner, was included in the Catalogue of an Exhibition of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain 14th to 19th Centuries, London, 1953, cat. no. 282. Compare also another example sold Christie's Hong Kong, 28th May 2014, lot 3313.
