NoteKashmir sapphires have a supreme beauty and rarity which has led them to become the most desired of all sapphires. Their reputation is owed to a brief period of intensive mining in one valley in the Zanskar range of the Himalayas between 1881 and 1887, but continued until 1925. Two of the most characteristic features of a Kashmir sapphire are its deep cornflower blue colour and velvety appearance, created by a layer of tiny inclusions commonly referred to as silk.
