The necklace composed of two six row pearl sections each terminating in black and white enamel and diamond shield-shaped plaques, to the central pearl, enamel and diamond pendant, circa 1880, 38.3 cm. long, in original maroon leather fitted case by C. Giuliano, 115 Piccadilly, London. With maker's mark CG for Carlo Giuliano.
Note: Giuliano took inspiration from an eclectic range of sources - first classical, often Renaissance, and sometimes Indian influences are clearly recognisable in his work, such as in this necklace, which is strung in the Indian taste. The presentation, however, is highly classical: the way it is laid out in its fitted box suggests the outline of a lyre, the ancient Greek instrument of leisure.
