2

Lot 452. A white-overlay pink glass snuff bottle, 1770-1850. Estimate USD 6,000 - USD 8,000. Photo Christie's Image Ltd 2016.

The bottle is carved through the milky-white overlay to the opaque pink ground with the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang) tied with ribbons. 2 ½ in. (6.4 cm.) high, shell stopper

ProvenanceHugh Moss (HK) Ltd., Hong Kong, 2001.
Ruth and Carl Barron Collection, Belmont, Massachusetts, no. 3302.

NoteThe color combination of pink and white creates a dramatic palette which would seem "like a marriage made in heaven for any carver of glass overlays," as discussed by Moss, Graham, Tsang, in A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, the Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 5, Part 3, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 607.
