Drinking Vessel made from Rhinoceros Horn, goblet: China, Ming dynasty, early 17th century, mount: Goa, 1650-1700, Javan rhinoceros horn, gold filigree mount © Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
The goblet, made from the horn of a Javan rhino – now only found in Indonesia and Vietnam. Drinking from rare rhino horn cups was believed to neutralise poison and clean the blood, although it’s doubtful this was ever used for drinking.
