Lot 2079. A superb 4.29 carats type IIb marquise-cut fancy vivid blue diamond and diamond ring, by Moussaieff. Estimate HKD 75,000,000 - HKD 95,000,000 (USD 9,713,175 - USD 12,303,355). Photo Christie's Images Ltd 2016.

Set with a marquise-cut fancy vivid blue diamond, weighing approximately 4.29 carats, flanked by triangular-shaped diamonds, mounted in platinum, ring size 5. Signed Moussaieff

Accompanied by report no. 15624930 dated 5 October 2016 from the GIA Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond is fancy vivid blue colour, internally flawless clarity

Also accompanied by a supplemental letter from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond has been determined to be a Type IIb diamond. Type IIb diamonds are very rare in nature and contains small amounts of boron that can give rise to a blue or gray coloration. An unusual property of type IIb diamonds is that they are semi-conductors and conduct electricity. Historically, the ancient mines of India produced occasional blue diamonds but today the most significant source is limited to the Cullinan (formerly Premier) Mine in South Africa. Among famous gem diamonds, the 70.21 carat Idol’s Eye and the 45.52 carat Hope are examples of type IIb.
