Unglazed Russet Colored Lidded Jar, Trần Dynasty 1225–1400 A.D., Vietnam. Height: 18cm © Zetterquist Galleries
A stoneware lidded jar with wide mouth, barrel shaped body standing on a reticulated base. The slightly flared base has circular and petal shaped cutouts below a band of downward facing lotus petals carved around the join with the body. The body is decorated with bands of shallow, rolled lotus petals and hatch marks around its girth. The mouth rim is everted with a raised interior ledge, onto which the lid sits snugly. The lid has a straight rim finished with a slightly flared upper edge, out of which rises a flattened dome with a band of stamped lotus petals surrounding a shallow well with the flattened finial handle in the center. The piece is unglazed, but the iron rich stoneware body has turned to a russet color during the kiln reduction phase. Small chips to lid.
This piece is a slightly later, higher production version of the preceding lot, less aristocratic and more mechanized in its decorative techniques, but still maintaining similar structural and decorative elements.
