Height: 29cm

A tall stoneware vase with bulbous body and a long neck with rounded mouth-rim. The piece sits on a slightly beveled foot rim with areas of loss, probably from kiln adhesion, now revealing it’s pale grey stoneware body. The entire piece is covered with an ideally realized minty-green celadon glaze with broad glaze crackle. Foot-rim chip with associated horizontal hairline crack has been repaired.

Two vases of similar form and scale, but with cylindrical ears, are published in “Celadons from Longquan Kilns”, 1998, pl. 111. The other in “The Charm of Celadon”, pg. 221 The form of this piece, is often referred to as a Mallet-Form. It is the nexus of a form that continues well into the Qing Dynasty.

Provenance: Private Japanese Collection. In an old lacquered Japanese box.
