NoteThis is a very rare example of a small group of vividly decorated Wanli blue and white or wucai lobed basins. Compare the Wanli-marked basin of similar form and size, but decorated with figures of Daoist immortals, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2012, lot 2212. A blue and white pentafoil basin decorated with a pair of dragons was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 7 July 2003, lot 651.

Two other Wanli blue and white lobed basins depicting figural scenes are known and both differ from the present example in their octagonal rather than pentafoil form. An example in the Palace Museum, Beijing is illustrated in The Complete Treasures of the Palace Museum - 35 - Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red, , Hong Kong, 2000, pp. 204-205, no. 189. The other example from the Sui Lin An and Meiyintang collections was most recently sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 April 2011, lot 72.

Two other pentafoil examples, both decorated in the wucai palette with figural scenes include one in the Eisei Bunko Foundation Tokyo, illustrated in Tokai Seij Zenshu, Tokyo, 1976, vol. 14, p. 103, pl. 105; and a second wucai example sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 September 1992, lot 483.
