Rank Badge for a Censor, Ming dynasty, Hongzhi Period (1488-1505). Silk slit tapestry weave (kesi), 14 x 14 1/4 inches (35.6 x 36.2 cm). Purchased with the John T. Morris Fund from the Carl Schuster Collection, 1940, 1940-4-745 © 2017 Philadelphia Museum of Art. This badge, which is decorated with an image of a xiezhai, a mythological animal said to be able to distinguish between good and evil, was worn by a censor.
