Lord Mayor of London Returns Nazi Looted Old Master Painting

LONDON - A Dutch Old Master painting that was looted from the Netherlands during World War II was returned by the Lord Mayor of London to an heir of the owner on Monday.

"The Oyster Meal" by Jacob Ochtervelt (around 1664-65) hung at Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor, for 30 years. It was part of a bequest to the house's collection, but recent research by Commission for Looted Art in Europe had uncovered that the painting was stolen by Nazis from J.H. Smidt van Gelder, the director of the children’s hospital in Arnhem, during the war.

Smidt van Gelder’s 96-year-old daughter, Charlotte Bischoff van Heemskerck, was given the artwork in a ceremony with Lord Mayor Andrew Parmley.
