Giuseppe Vermiglio (1585 Alessandria – 1635), Portrait of a gentleman
Lot 1259. Giuseppe Vermiglio (1585 Alessandria – 1635), Portrait of a gentleman. Oil on canvas, 145.5 x 101 cm. Estimate € 90.000 - 110.000. Courtesy Hampel
The noble young man shown in three-quarter view, supported a hand on his hip, the other resting on a helmet with a high, magnificent plume, which is on the table on the left side. Right dressed a fine, elegant drapery in red. The man with magnificent brocade harem pants and fine lace shirt under the breastplate. This has fine gold ornaments on the chest and arms. The man looking to the left to a point outside the picture and past the viewer into the distance. It is the tremendous naturalism in the representation that gives this painting something stately and speaks for the high level of Dargestllten. The activity Vermiglios in Lombardy and Piedmont of the early 17th century suggests that the sitter should also come from this region.
