Lot 1094. Andrea Belvedere, called Abate Andrea (1652 Naples - 1732 Naples), Large floral still life with peonies, parrot tulips, mallows, larkspur, iris and nasturtium. Oil on canvas (relined). 98 x 173 cm. Estimate: € 70,000 - € 80,000 © Lempertz
Certificate: Mina Gregori, Florence, 18.1.2003.
Provenance: Italian private collection.
Note: Belvedere was one of the most important representatives of Neapolitan still life painting. He was inspired by the works of his teacher Paolo Porpora and Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo. Between 1694 and 1700 he lived as court painter Charles II of Spain in Madrid, on whose behalf he was involved, together with Luca Giordano, in the painting of the Escorial.
The asymmetric composition, with the sun-drenched flowers in front of a monochrome, shadowy landscape, makes up the special charm of this large-format still life. The powerful chiaroscuro characterizes the works of Belevederes in particular.
Mina Gregori describes the present painting in the corresponding expertise as a masterful and exemplary work of Andrea Belvedere.
