Lot 330. A fine yellow and blue 'Dragon' dish, Kangxi six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle and of the period (1662-1722); 9 7/8 in. (25 cm.) diam. Estimate USD 50,000 - USD 70,000. Price realised USD 60,000. © Christie's Images Ltd 2007.
The interior decorated with a five-clawed dragon leaping amidst clouds and flames in pursuit of a flaming pearl, below dragons at similar pursuit in the well, and also on the exterior above a band of petal lappets, all in lemon yellow reserved on an ink-blue ground.
Provenance: Formerly in the Sir Joseph E. Hotung Family Trust.
Note: The present dish is a superb example for its strong coloration and controlled use of the blue ground. Compare a similar dish illustrated in Qingdai Yuyao Ciqi, Beijing, 2005, vol. 1, book 1, pp. 138-141, no. 36.
