An unusual sancai jar, Tang dynasty

An unusual sancai jar, Tang dynasty

Lot 141. An unusual sancai jar, Tang dynasty; 6in (15.2cm) high. Estimate US$ 12,000 - 18,000 (€ 10,000 - 15,000)Unsold. © Bonhams 2001-2018

Potted with a compressed globular body, the shoulder impressed with the outline of eight florets highlighted with amber and ivory glaze over blue, running towards the base over incised lines encircling the body and mingling with an amber glaze, leaving resist-decorated spots and falling in an irregular line above the flared foot ring, all surmounted by a short flared amber glazed neck, the interior covered with a pale yellow wash.

Note: The present lot is unusual for the band of impressed flower heads encircling the shoulder. It is more common to see raised molded medallions, such as seen on the example sold in Christie's New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1451. This method of impressing floral decorations was more commonly used on dishes, as in this example sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, 6 October 2015, lot 90.
