with steep conical sides flaring at the rim, freely painted with a writhing dragon and phoenix pursuing 'flaming pearls' to the exterior and upper half of the interior wall, centered by a roundel depicting a peak rising above turbulent waves under a moon in mist, the base inscribed with an apocryphal six-character Chenghua mark.
Provenance: Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964), and thence by descent.
