Panel with boys at play, Ming dynasty (1368–1644), late 16th–early 17th century

Panel with boys at play, Ming dynasty (1368–1644), late 16th–early 17th century. Silk and metal thread tapestry (kesi). Overall: 18 1/4 x 15 in. (46.4 x 38.1 cm). Fletcher Fund, 1936; 36.65.30© 2000–2018 The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This textile is probably a portion of a much larger piece, perhaps a hanging, that would have illustrated many groups of small boys at play in a garden. Items bearing this popular theme were particularly favored as wedding gifts, for the boys symbolize increase, abundance, and future happiness.
