Eight painted gray pottery figures of attendants, Han dynasty

79

Lot 79. Eight painted gray pottery figures of attendants, Han dynasty  (206 BC - 220 AD). Heights 11 3/8  in., 29 cm. Estimate 8,000 — 12,000 USD. Lot sold 8,125 USD. © Sotheby's

modeled after wood prototypes, six with their hands folded and concealed by their sleeves, five with a hole to hold an implement, two with arms held out at waist level, each painted wearing patterned robes, their features painted in black and vermillion, with a display stand (16).

ProvenanceSotheby's New York, 21st and 22nd September 2005, lot 242.

Note: The present group of pottery figures is exceptional for its well-preserved painting that displays the array of textile designs and colors used in clothing during the Han dynasty, and each figure has different facial features. The figures with their hands concealed by their sleeves each have a hole where the sleeves meet to hold an implement, possibly made of wood, that is no longer extant.

Sotheby's. Fine Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art, New York, 19 march 2013.
