A fahua vase, Ming dynasty, 15th-16th century

Lot 917. A fahua vase, Ming dynasty, 15th-16th century; 13¼ in. (33.7 cm.) high. Estimate USD 15,000 - USD 20,000. Price realised USD 15,000© Christie's Images Ltd 2014

The vase is robustly potted and relief decorated with lotus plants and grasses rising from cresting waves below a garland of beaded chains suspending precious objects on the rounded shoulder, all below a ruyi-head border on the neck. The decoration is outlined in lines of slip and glazed in turquoise, yellow, and white against a dark blue ground.

Note: Compare a similarly decorated fahua vase, also dated to the Ming dynasty, formerly from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, sold at Christie's New York, 24 March 2011, lot 1229.
