Each half of the tally is carved in the form of a recumbent tiger, with the spine decorated with six archaistic characters in seal script. The interior of each half is incised with an identical long archaistic inscription incorporating different government official titles surrounding a large 'tong' ('the same') character.
Provenance: Acquired circa 1900-1960s, and thence by descent within the family to the present owner.
