Furniture from a North-American Chinese family collection, formed during the late Qing dynasty at Christie's, 26 March 2010

Lot 1228. An unusual zitan corner-leg partner's desk; 33¾ in. (85.7 cm.) high, 55 3/8 in. (140.7 cm.) wide, 27 3/8 in. (69.5 cm.) deep. Estimate USD 40,000 - USD 60,000. Price realised USD 386,500. © Christie's Image Ltd 2010.

With three-panel top set within the wide, rectangular frame, above aprons and spandrels carved with archaistic scroll, the aprons of the two long sides opening to reveal two concealed drawers, all supported on legs of square section joined by a base stretcher raised on small tabs.

Provenance: Acquired by the grandfather of the present owners, Whampoa, Guangdong, circa 1890-1920s, thence by descent within the family.

With three-panel top set within the long, rectangular frame, the openwork waist with quadrilobe struts set within narrow frames, above plain stretchers and key fret-form spandrels, the whole supported on beaded legs of square section terminating in hoof feet.

Provenance: Acquired by the grandfather of the present owners, Whampoa, Guangdong, circa 1890-1920s, thence by descent within the family.

With elaborately carved openwork splat in the form of elongated, archaistic kui dragons beneath a stylized ruyi head, the curved arm rails with further archaistic scroll and kuidragon heads emerging from the lower rail, the shaped aprons carved with ruyi-head and cloud-form scroll, the whole supported on legs of square section terminating in scroll-form feet and joined by thick stretchers above plain aprons.

Each with square beaded corner posts enclosing four tiered shelves framed by carved leafy scroll, above two doors elaborately carved with further archaistic scroll opening to reveal two drawers above a single shelf, the archaistic scroll repeated on the shaped aprons.
