Lot 243. A Rare Large Grey-Green-Glazed Jar and Cover, Six Dynasties (220–589); 17½in. (44.5cm.) high. Estimate USD 30,000 - USD 40,000. Price realised USD 28,200. © Christie's Image Limited
Of ovoid form tapering to a flat base, the high shoulder applied with two single and two pairs of loop handles of angular outline, each pair positioned below a small loop pendent from the lower edge of the flared, galleried rim, the hat-shaped cover with wide everted rim and slightly domed top incised with a flowerhead at the base of the knop (now broken), covered overall with a clear crackled glaze of grey-green tone.
Note: Jars of this type and size are rare, and one with a cover is even more rare. Compare a smaller jar of this form, with a more yellowish degraded glaze, illustrated by Lu Yaw, Lee Kong Chian Art Museum, Singapore, ca. 1990, pl. 35.
