Lot 1357. A rare small green and aubergine-decorated yellow-ground 'dragon' dish, Kangxi six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle and of the period (1662-1722)5 9/16 in. (14.3 cm.) diamEstimate USD 18,000 - USD 25,000Price realised USD 32,500. © Christie’s Image Ltd 2013.

With shallow rounded sides, the center is decorated with two dragons contesting a flaming pearl amidst flames within a double-line border. The exterior is decorated with a repeating design of cranes and scrolling clouds, all in aubergine and green reserved on a pale egg yolk-yellow ground.

Provenance: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 14 November 1990, lot 354.

Note: It is rare to find a Kangxi dish of this type, with green and aubergine dragons on the interior, combined with cranes and clouds on the reverse. Dishes of this type are more commonly decorated with clusters of grapes, such as the example sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November, 2011, lot 3132. A similar Kangxi-marked dish, also with cranes and clouds on the reverse, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 17 May 1988, lot 102. Compare, also, the Jiaqing-marked example illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum- Miscellaneous Enamelled Porcelains and Plain Tricoloured Porcelains, Shanghai, 2009, p.170, pl. 135.
