A rare moulded and carved celadon-glazed vase, Qianlong seal mark and period (1736-1795)
Lot 430. A rare moulded and carved celadon-glazed vase, Qianlong seal mark and period (1736-1795); 46.3cm., 18 1/4 in. Estimate 8,000 - 12,000 GBP. Lot sold 51,650 GBP. Photo Sotheby's
the slender ovoid body rising from a splayed foot to a waisted neck flaring at the rim, moulded and carved to the exterior with stylised lotus scrolls with leafy tendrils, covered overall with a sea-green glaze pooling to a deeper colour in the recesses, the base impressed with a six-character Qianlong seal mark.
Note: This elegant vase is notable for the crisply rendered lotus scroll, the flowing lines of which are subtly captured through the skilful application of the glaze. A closely related vase from the Huaihaitang collection was included in the exhibition Ethereal Elegance. Porcelain Vases of the Imperial Qing, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 2007, cat. no. 51; and another was offered at Christie's Hong Kong, 26th April 2004, lot 909.
