Lot 3646. A fine and very rare glass overlay 'peach shaped' snuff bottle, Qianlong inicsed four-character seal mark and of the period (1736-1795); 2in. (5 cm.) diamEstimate HKD 1,000,000 - HKD 2,000,000. Price Realized HKD 980,000. © Christie's Images Ltd 2011.

The bottle of slightly compressed form, resting on a flat base, the white metal body covered in a red glass layer and crisply carved with scrolling clouds from the white glass overlay, the aperture surrounded by green overlay glass collar, the sealmark incised neatly on the base, stopper

Provenance: Previously sold at Sotheby's New York, 29 November 1993, lot 80.

Note: The decorative motif of scrolling clouds on this snuff bottle is very rare and more commonly found porcelain, such as the Kangxi waterpot carved with clouds and covered in a celadon glaze, or the pair of Yongzheng waterpots decorated with doucai clouds, both in the Greenwald Collection, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1 December 2010, lots 2815 and 2816.

It has been suggested that the motif is a pun on the word 'Cloud', Yun, which is a homophone as 'Fortune'.
