H0046-L21502132

Lot 3270. A rare white jade 'Twin deer' paperweight, Qing dynasty, 18th century; 5.5 cm., 2 1/8 in. Estimate 200,000 — 300,000 HKDLot Sold 400,000 HKD. Courtesy Sotheby's.

of pebble form, the fine white stone well carved with two interlocking deer, their heads confronting each other while each holding a sprig of lingzhi in their mouths, the heads carved in relief with gentle faces and small pointed ears, their bodies curved with the head of one resting on the hind quarter of the other, all resting upon two large leaves, their tiny feet well defined on the underside.

Note: It is quite unusual to find interlocking deer carvings.  The form is usually seen with badgers.  See one from the Zhirouzhai Collection, sold in our rooms 8th October 2008, lot 2315.  Deer and lingzhi are auspicious symbols for longevity.
