Lot 34. A small pale green and russet jade boulder, 18th century; 26.2cm (10 3/8in) wide. Estimate HK$ 50,000-80,000. Sold for HK$ 62,500 (€ 7,466). Photo: Bonhams.
Finely carved with a sage within a grotto, standing beside an incense burner on a stone pedestal and holding a staff, all within a rocky landscape with pine trees and a waterfall cascading down between cliffs, the even pale green stone with speckles of dark brown inclusions, wood stand..
Provenance: Acquired from Bluett & Sons, London, on 16 March 1959 (invoice dated 24 March 1959)
An English private collection and thence by descent.
Note: The present lot is remarkable for the tender and naturalistic carving of the horse and foal, with the adult horse carved with its head raised in a protective poise over the playful young foal. The craftsman cleverly utilised the russet and greenish sections of the stone to denote the horses' hide adding a further visual dimension to the lively group.
