the inkstone well carved from a block of wood in the form of a recumbent water buffalo with its head turned backwards towards the concave inkwell, all applied with a coating of black lacquer, the original black lacquer box and cover correspondingly shaped with the cover depicting a similar recumbent water buffalo, traces of gilding on the cover of the box.
