the domed cover with a large peony blossom wreathed by lush foliage, the shallow sides with floral buds and blooms alternating with large leaves, the interior and base lacquered dark brown, Japanese wood box.

NoteAnother early Ming cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover of larger size from the collection of the Kaisendo museum, similarly carved with peony flowers, was sold in these rooms, 11th July 2020, lot 3632.
