A Longquan Celadon Openwork ‘Felicity And Longevity’ Vase With Handles, Yuan Dynasty, 1271-1368

Lot 3594. A Longquan Celadon Openwork ‘Felicity And Longevity’ Vase With Handles, Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). H 33.5cm. Sold for HKD 288,000/USD 36,923 (Estimate HKD 180,000 - 250,000/USD 23,077 - 32,051). © Poly Auction Hong Kong Limited

Vase is potted in a compressed pear-shape form with oval section, rising from a splayed foot to a flared quatrefoil rim, set with two dragon-head loop handles suspending loose rings. The body is carved in openwork revealing a narrow tubular body inside, with a fu (‘happiness’) and a shou (‘long life’) character enclosed in a barbed medallion and flanked by the flowers of the four seasons on either side. There are peony and camellia emerging from rockwork, and chrysanthemum and pomegranate rising from waves. The foot is encircled by a key-fret border repeated at the base of the neck below a collar of upright plantain leaves. The vase is richly applied with a vivid yellowish-green glaze thinning to white on the carved areas while the unglazed footring fired to brick red.
