NEW YORK, NY.- In celebration of Asia Week New York, Doyle will hold two auctions showcasing Asian Works of Art. The sales will present the arts of China, Japan and elsewhere in Asia dating from the Neolithic Period through the 20th century. Among the 700 lots to be offered are porcelains, bronzes, jades, snuff bottles, pottery, scholar’s objects, furniture and paintings from prominent collections and distinguished estates.
The first auction will take place on Monday, March 21 at 10am, and Session II will be presented as a timed auction closing on Friday, March 25 at 10am. A featured section of the March 21 auction will showcase property from the Collection of Steven J. Harvis. Now retired, Mr. Harvis was a Manhattan attorney for 50 years and built, as the senior partner, a national and international law firm. He has been collecting, studying and dealing in Chinese works of art from the Shang Dynasty through the Republic Period for more than 35 years. His relationship with the Chinese art departments at major New York auction houses goes back over 30 years. Mr. Harvis was involved in the cataloguing, research and authorship of the descriptions of each of the pieces of his collection being offered at Doyle.

Raised on a short foot and with flat everted rim; the interior decorated with a central medallion showing a dragon amongst clouds, the underside molded with overlapping lotus petals; with labeled Japanese wooden collector's box.

The hexagonal tapering vessels with everted rim and angled bracket feet at corners, decorated with subtly carved lotus blossom panels; with good fitted zitan stands; with silk-lined fitted Japanese collector boxes.

The large cylindrical vase of variegated spinach jade is meticulously embellished in lacquer, hardstone, pearl, and composition by the Japanese Tsuda Family of Kyoto to show a scene of Chinese figures in an mythological mountainous realm.

The carved bowl rising from a short foot; the exterior sides with twelve carved concentric rings rising in a soft curve to the rounded everted rim; the interior of the bowl has a large carved round cavetto in which a crane in full flight is surrounded by simple floral swirls; surrounding the cavetto is a continuous swirling band of a floral design that stops at a carved circular line just below the rounded rim, the bowl covered inside and out with a glaze of slightly olive tone.

Note: It is rare to find a Yaozhou bowl of this size; and even more rare to find one with a crane in full flight. Consider some of the representative sales of these Yaozhou examples: A Yaozhou bowl 6 3/4 inches (17 cm) with a duck in the cavetto and surrounded by florals was recently sold at Christies Hong Kong 29 November 2020, lot 3028 (Realized price HKD 400,000); An undecorated 9-inch (22.9 cm) Yaozhou dish was sold at Christies Hong Kong 3 October 2018 lot 225 (Realized Price HKD 175,000); a larger bowl 8 1/8 inches (20.6 cm) with hibiscus and leaf decoration was sold at Christies New York 21 March 2018, lot 501 (Realized price USD 372,500); and an 8 5/8 inch (21.9 cm) floral decorated bowl was sold at Christies New York 14 September 2011, lot 1467 (Realized price USD 68,500).

Of octagonal form raised on four short feet, with barbed rims and twin-carp handles supporting freely carved rings; the interior carved with a central blossom and radiating leaves surrounded by four butterflies; very delicately carved; with fitted wood stands.

Sturdily potted with an ovoid body rising to a waisted neck with two molded rings and then flaring to a galleried rim; there is a short spout in the form of a chicken-head, and a long-arched handle terminating in a dragon head grasping the mouth rim of the ewer; the ewer's shoulder has three equally spaced iron splashes; and circling the shoulder stopping before the spout is a detailed molded four clawed chilong with a long tail, one of the iron splashes pouring over its side. The ewer is covered all over with a grayish-celadon crackle glaze, stopping at the foot, the flat base burnt orange in the firing.

Note: While there are examples of Yue celadon ewers of this type that have small iron spots on the spout and body, this rare example displays three large iron splashes and has a fully molded, detailed chilong circling almost the entirety of its body. See Christies Hong Kong 5 October 2015, lot 73 (Realized price HKD 187,500) for a chicken head spout ewer with only several small iron spots.

Each stout urn of baluster form with decorative horizontal bands, cast atop a rocky base upon which figures flank water spirit peeking from above a waterfall; the heavily cast covers surmounted by sculptural groupings of eagles perched atop rocky outcrops battling serpents.
